Phulkari suit is salwar kameez with the Phulkari embroidery etched on it. The Phulkari embroidery is an art form from the Punjab region in the Indian subcontinent. It literally means "flower work" or "flower craft". The Phulkari thread work is done on coarse woven cotton material with shiny and coloured silk thread. It is a most exquisite kind of embroidery and was originally a domestic art form woven at home by women.
Phulkari suits were, in ancient times, given as part of her belongings to a Punjabi bride by her family. Therefore, Phulkari suits carry a long Punjabi heritage and culture with them. They were developed commercially only in the twentieth century. Phulkari suits have geometric patterns etched on them. They mostly use red-coloured cotton fabric because red was an auspicious colour for a bride. Other colours in use include- shades of red, blue, black, brown and white/off-white. The more elaborate and fulfilling Phulkari suits have the "Bagh" embroidery on them.
Phulkari suits are extremely popular with girls and women today because of their amazing colour combination and patterns as well as designs. Authentic Phulkari suits are hard to find and so at Textile Infomedia, you can find the names of all the wholesalers in Chennai, Tamil Nadu that sell the best quality and original Phulkari suits.
