Hemp fabric is made from the fibers of herbaceous plants, which is a crop with a yield higher than that of cotton or flax. Hemp is one of the strongest and the most durable natural fabric and is also naturally resistant to growing mold or damage from UV light. The fabric is highly porous and natural. This results in hemp fabric absorbing more water and its dying retaining better color than any fabric. Hemp fiber is more durable and strong than cotton. However, cotton is softer than hemp and feels comfortable on the skin, unlike hemp which has a rough feel to it. Since the fibers of the hemp plants are long and sturdy, the hemp fabric is soft, yet highly durable. For example, if on the average cotton t-shirt is expected to last 10 years, a t-shirt from hemp fabric is expected to last twice or even thrice that time. This shows that hemp is twice or thrice more durable than cotton. However, hemp has a tendency to shrink when washed in warm water, just like any other natural fiber. The long fibers in hemp can be recycled up to 7 times, as opposed to wood-based paper, which can be recycled only for up to 3 times. This makes hemp one of the most durable natural fibers.
